The H\u00f4tel de Bourrienne, built in 1787, was first owned by Fortun\u00e9e Hamelin<\/strong>, then by Louis-Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne<\/strong>, Napoleon’s secretary. Witness to the French revolutionary era, this exceptional building illustrates the style of the Directoire and Consulate<\/strong> periods. A free and influential place under the leadership of Fortun\u00e9e Hamelin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1792, the H\u00f4tel de Bourrienne belonged to the Lormier-Lagrave couple. Their daughter, Fortun\u00e9e, married Antoine Hamelin<\/strong>, a supplier to the armies, and inherited the hotel. A figure of the Directoire and Consulate periods, she became a fashion icon of the “Merveilleuses<\/em><\/strong>“, famous for her daring outfits. Her intelligence and charm enlivened one of the most sought-after salons in Paris, frequented by the likes of Jos\u00e9phine de Beauharnais<\/strong>, Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte<\/strong> and Madame Tallien<\/strong>. Fortun\u00e9e was suspected of having acted as a spy for Napoleon, notably during a diplomatic mission to Russia, although the extent of her espionage role is a matter of debate among historians.<\/p>\n\n\n

The “House” of Philtre since 2020<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The hotel, listed as a historic monument<\/strong> since 1927, was acquired in 2015 by French entrepreneur Charles Beigbeder<\/strong>. Restoration work has brought the Art Nouveau decor back to life beneath layers of wallpaper. The renovation involved craftsmen and experts, who were able to restore the character of every room in the building. The garden was replanted according to the original English layout, and the upper floors were modernized to accommodate the offices of the various companies<\/p>\n\n\n\n
